Innovative WHIS®wall Tested in Susteren
In the town of Susteren, an innovative solution is being tested to reduce railway noise in a smart and sustainable way. In collaboration with ProRail, 4Silence has installed a test setup of the WHIS®wall, a low-height noise barrier measuring only one meter tall.
Unlike traditional high sound walls, the WHIS®wall is designed to reflect and scatter noise back toward the railway track, significantly reducing noise levels while preserving the view for nearby residents. This makes it especially suitable for locations like Susteren, where the railway runs close to homes.
Why Susteren?
It’s an ideal pilot location due to its proximity between residential areas and the railway. Noise pollution has been a long-standing issue here, making it the perfect place to test innovative noise reduction technologies like the WHIS®wall.
Smarter Sound Barriers
Traditional noise barriers are often large, costly, and visually intrusive. The WHIS®wall presents a smarter alternative: compact, effective, and better integrated into open landscapes. The low-profile design not only improves acoustics but also maintains visual quality in the area.
Sustainable Infrastructure
This trial wiht prorail is part of a broader research initiative aimed at finding more efficient, affordable, and sustainable noise control solutions for Dutch railways. If successful, This pilot could serve as a model for similar projects across the Netherlands.
