Frequently Asked Questions
What does 4Silence do?
4Silence develops and delivers innovative noise reduction solutions for road and rail infrastructure. Instead of relying on traditional methods.
Our products are designed to blend into the environment while maintaining high acoustic performance. With faster installation times and lower material usage, we offer efficient, cost-effective alternatives for noise control in urban and rural settings.
What is diffraction?
Diffraction is the spreading out of waves as they pass through an aperture or around objects. It occurs when the size of the aperture or obstacle is of the same order of magnitude as the wavelength of the incident wave.

What products do we sell?
At 4Silence, we offer a range of innovative noise reduction solutions designed for various environments and needs. Our products:
WHIS®stone – Elements placed at ground level.
WHIS®wall – low, deflective noise barriers.
WHIS®barrier – low, deflective noise barriers.
WHIS®panel – acoustic noise barriers.
WHIS®top – an add-on to enhance the performance of existing noise barriers.
WHIS®damper – vibration-reducing elements for bridges.
Each product is engineered to deliver high performance with minimal visual and spatial impact.
What is the difference between 4Silence products and a regular noise barrier?
Unlike traditional noise barriers that are often 3 meters high, 4Silence products are only about 1 meter in height. Despite their compact size, they are highly effective thanks to diffraction. This low-profile design preserves sightlines and integrates more easily into the environment. Additionally, our systems are faster to install, allowing us to build a large number of meters in just one day, significantly reducing construction time and disruption.
Where can our noise reduction solutions be applied?
Depending on the product, 4Silence’s noise reduction solutions can be applied to roads, railways, and bridges.
Is our solution tested and certified?
Yes, in 2016 acoustic experts from TNO, M+P, DgMP, DB-Vision, Rijkswaterstaat, and Prorail, develop measurement and calculation requirements for 4Silence’s diffracting products, so they can become available in the GEOMilieu software package.
Where is 4Silence located?
4Silence based in a bunker at Technology Base in Twente, the heart of innovation.
How long has 4Silence been active?
In 2012 Ysbrand Wijnant developed the idea of noise reduction of traffic noise by means of deflection: diffraction. The year 4Silence started
