WHIS®damper in Zaandam, the Netherlands

The Coenbrug in the municipality of Zaanstad has been successfully equipped with 800 WHIS®damper (CLD) plates and several thousand magnets. This innovative solution significantly reduces noise caused by vibrations in steel bridges, enhancing the quality of life for nearby residents.

What is CLD?

CLD stands for Constrained Layer Damping. It is a proven technology that effectively reduces bridge vibrations. A visco-elastic material is clamped between the bridge structure and a thin steel plate. When the bridge vibrates, these vibrations are absorbed and transformed into heat. As a result, the overall noise emission from the bridge is drastically reduced.

Why choose the WHIS®damper?

  • Effective noise reduction – noticeable decrease in steel bridge vibration noise.

  • Innovative design – advanced use of visco-elastic materials for long-term performance.

  • Seamless integration – can be applied to both temporary and permanent bridge structures.

  • Proven in practice – already implemented successfully on the Lammebrug in Leiden.

  • No screws or welding – only magnets

Collaboration

This project was realized in collaboration with Slangen Staal B.V., Vibratec Akustikprodukter AB, and Rijkswaterstaat. Together, we demonstrated how modern engineering and smart acoustic solutions can contribute to quieter and more sustainable infrastructure.
